History, Geography, Sciences and Design & Technology

Our Interdisciplinary Learning curriculum ensures that our children develop both a rich knowledge  and coherent understanding of the world in which they live by learning about other people and their values, in different times, places and circumstances; whilst also developing their awareness of the living, material and physical environment and how it has been shaped. By drawing on prior knowledge, fostering curiosity, providing opportunities for personalisation and choice, and learning new knowledge and skills, our curriculum enables our children to transfer and apply that collective knowledge to new problems and other areas of learning allowing them to grow, develop and flourish. It seeks to spark our children’s fascination with new discoveries and technologies, enabling them to become creative, inventive and enterprising individuals who can influence their world positively and collaboratively as global citizens.

Term 1 - The Victorian Impact on the World

Learning about the Victorians offers a fascinating glimpse into an era that profoundly shaped the modern world. From groundbreaking innovations in technology and industry to the expansion of the British Empire, the Victorian era influenced everything from science and medicine to art, literature, and social structures. Throughout our learning, we will aim to understand this period and reveal the roots of many contemporary ideas and challenges, as well as the complexities of progress, with its mix of ambition and contradictions. Delving into the Victorians helps us see how their contributions, both positive and negative, continue to resonate today.

Term 2 - India

We plan to take the children on an enriching journey through one of the world’s oldest and most diverse civilizations. From cutting-edge technology innovations that are shaping the future, to its vibrant food culture that blends bold flavours and centuries-old traditions, India offers a unique perspective on modern life. The country’s rich cultural heritage—spanning languages, music, dance, festivals, and art—reflects a deep history of philosophical thought and spiritual wisdom.

Term 3 - Titanic

Learning about the Titanic offers a compelling insight into both human triumphs and tragedies. The story of this legendary ship—once thought to be "unsinkable"—reveals important lessons in engineering, ambition, and the consequences of overconfidence. Studying the Titanic's voyage, from its construction to its tragic sinking, helps us understand the importance of safety, the limitations of technology, and the impact of social class in the early 20th century. It also provides a poignant reminder of the lasting emotional impact of history’s great disasters, making it a powerful way to connect with the past and reflect on how far we’ve come and we thoroughly enjoy debating about this during our class inquiries at the end of the topic.

Term 4 - Global Challenges - Kenya

Exploring global challenges through the lens of comparisons between Kenya and Scotland offers a fascinating perspective on how different regions tackle shared issues. From climate change and sustainability to education, healthcare, and economic development, each country faces unique obstacles shaped by its geography, history, and culture. In Kenya, challenges like access to clean water and agricultural sustainability are paramount, while Scotland deals with issues like energy transition and rural depopulation. By comparing these nations, we gain a deeper understanding of how local contexts influence global solutions, and how diverse approaches can inspire innovation and collaboration in addressing the world’s most pressing problems.

Science in the Senior School

A practical approach is taken to the teaching of Science with lessons taking place in a Science laboratory with a Senior School Science Teacher. Topics covered include: Investigating Science, Energy, Rocks, Genetics, Variety of Life and Titanic. There will also be a CSI Day in Term 4 incorporating aspects of Forensic Science.

Design & Technology

Technology, like Science, is a very practical subject which is incorporated into all of our Topics. It involves a range of skills including teamwork, coordination and fine motor skills. Through a variety of activities, and experience of the physical world, the children will develop an understanding of common materials, tools and joining methods.
