This area of Learning for Life aims to enable our children to make a positive difference to the world by putting their beliefs and values into action through learning about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It intends to develop in our children the knowledge, skills and understanding to play a full part in society as active and responsible global citizens. Economic wellbeing forms part of this learning to help our children understand their feelings about money, make age appropriate financial decisions, explore various future careers and prepare them for adult life.
This programme (from Education Scotland) aims to support children in understanding some effects of adversity and trauma on wellbeing. It aims to support children in developing compassion, empathy and tolerance in their relationships with others, understanding that they have the right to be protected and supported by the adults in their lives. It also provides them with strategies and personal coping skills to help them deal with challenges and develop resilience.
From this base we move on to helping our children to explore compassion towards others across the UK by learning about the importance of the system of democracy in both the Scottish and UK Parliaments. The children will explore freedom and equality between all people, learning how important decisions are made in Parliament and the direct impact these decisions can make. The children will learn about the rights and responsibilities of citizens in Scotland and the topic will culminate in an excursion to the Scottish Parliament building.
As part of the India topic, the children will learn about Mahatma Gandhi and his use of non-violent resistance that led to India's independence from British rule. They will explore civil rights and learn how Gandhi still inspires movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
