Children will have between 40 minutes and 1 hour of homework each day, Monday to Thursday. This will usually consist of spelling, reading and maths activities. Occasionally, there may be topic-related research to be done. Homework details will be posted on Seesaw.  It is essential that children check Seesaw in order to develop an organised approach to tackling homework. Please help your child plan and schedule the best way to complete these homework tasks.

The Homefile will be used as a communication tool between school and home. Please check and sign this daily. Your child should ensure that their Homefile is brought to school each day and is neatly presented and well looked after with no graffiti. Should a Homefile be lost there will be a charge for its replacement.

Helping your child

You can help your child with homework by providing them with a quiet environment in which to work with the minimum of distraction e.g., TV turned off! Encourage them to work independently but give advice and help if they need it. Let your child’s teacher know if they found their homework too difficult rather than doing the homework for them. Please also encourage your child to present their work neatly and carefully.

Frequently Asked Questions about Homework

Should I correct my child’s mistakes?

We are keen for parents to be involved and correcting mistakes is beneficial to your child. However, should your child have made a lot of mistakes and not grasped a concept, you may wish to leave this for the teacher to address.

What should I do if my child does not understand a task?

You should feel free to give your child a little help but if your child remains confused, a note in the Homefile would be advantageous.

What should I do if my child cannot complete homework?

A simple note in the Homefile if your child has been unwell or similar will allow the teacher to know what has happened.

What should I do if homework is taking a long time?

Children in Primary 6 should not spend more than 1 hour on homework a night. If it takes longer then stop your child and write a brief note on the homework or in the Homefile.

What should I do if my child does not bring home the required books?

Your child should catch up the missed homework as soon as possible.

How will I know if my child is not completing homework?

Teachers will communicate with parents in order to work in partnership to support the child.

Is it acceptable for me to help my child with their writing?

Some children, who find writing difficult, are given help in school by a teacher or  teacher assistant who writes the words down as the child says them. This is called scribing. Please speak to your child’s Class Teacher if you think this might help with homework. Providing a word bank and talking sentences out loud before writing them down is also helpful.
