Learning a new language encourages children and young people to broaden their horizons as they explore the language and its associated culture. Through learning a new language children develop a deeper understanding of their first language; appreciate the richness and interconnected nature of languages; they enhance their understanding and enjoyment of other cultures and of their own and gain insights into other ways of thinking and other views of the world. They also develop skills that they can use and enjoy in work and leisure throughout their lives.
Following on from their early exposure to the language in Primary 2-5, Primary 6 children will continue to expand their knowledge of vocabulary and will be exposed to longer pieces of reading and writing. They will be taught for one hour per week, by specialist teachers from the Senior School, and will continue to experience the language in the form of songs, games or stories but will also be introduced to words and texts, using simple sentences.
Minimal homework may be set and could involve vocabulary learning (from vocabulary booklets, activity booklets and the Linguascope.com website) or practising simple sentences/questions for oral or written purposes.
