In Physical Education our Primary 1 children follow a curriculum that offers a wide range of activities and experiences that challenge and develop them physically but also socially and emotionally.

Lessons are structured to promote individual skill development whilst recognising the importance of building self-confidence and self-esteem within the physical environment. Through partner and group tasks children develop their interpersonal skills and learn the value of teamwork. They learn to communicate with and respect others, recognise their own and others unique abilities and support their classmates in achieving common goals.

Through competitive challenges the children experience, explore and learn to manage their emotions whilst involved in tasks. In all lessons the children will be encouraged to take personal responsibility for their performance and be involved in tasks that offer opportunities for decision making and reflection. Where tasks are more demanding the children will discuss the importance of resilience in overcoming challenges and of time and patience in practice in striving to achieve success.

In Primary 1 the children all receive one and a half hours of formal PE per week. This is split into two forty-five minute sessions and is taught by specialist teachers from the Senior School. Usually the lessons are based in the hall at Easter Ravelston and during the summer months, when the weather is warmer, they also have the opportunity to have PE outside.

Within PE, children remain in their classes and participate in 6 week blocks of activity which follow a planned and progressive programme of movement development.
