In Primary 1 the children are acquiring key skills in Numeracy and Mathematics. We adopt a very practical approach to the teaching of key concepts and there are a number of ways that you could continue to support this at home (please see the document at the bottom of the page for details).
At ESMS, we aim to nurture mathematicians who are:
curious
confident
capable
Our curriculum fosters deep conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and number sense, instilling a joy in learning through engaging and meaningful experiences. We emphasise the relevance of mathematics in daily life, building a secure understanding of numbers with strong mental strategies. We ensure all children have opportunities to retrieve and build on prior learning using consistent and precise mathematical language. Through rich problem-solving experiences, we foster resilience, reasoning and mathematical curiosity, using inclusive classroom design to prepare all children for future success.
Curriculum Overview and Progression (Primary 1 - Primary 7)
We use the White Rose Maths framework to guide our learning journey and ensure consistency in language, resources, and visual representations across all year groups. Our teachers use White Rose as a foundation to design bespoke, engaging lessons tailored to the needs of our children.
White Rose Calculation Policy
We follow the White Rose Calculation Policy, which is based on the English National Curriculum. As a result, the terminology used refers to English year groups. For reference: Year 1 corresponds to Primary 2, Year 2 to Primary 3, Year 3 to Primary 4, Year 4 to Primary 5, Year 5 to Primary 6, and Year 6 to Primary 7. For Primary 1, we draw on guidance from both Reception and Year 1.
How to Support at Home
Vocabulary
When we introduce the concept of addition the children learn that a number of different terms can refer to the same ‘sign’ or ‘process’.
+ and, add, plus, more
- take away, subtract, minus, less
= makes, equals, altogether, same
At this stage the vocabulary used is quite simple but this is built upon year on year.
