Children will have approximately 15 minutes homework each day, Monday to Thursday. This will usually consist of:

  • Phonics or Reading activities - four times weekly starting a short time after school entry
  • Maths Games and Maths Homework activities
  • Weekly library book (often sent home on a Friday).

Please check your child’s reading folder on a daily basis. New reading books and phonics resources will be added regularly, and we will keep you informed of how best to support your child at home through the Homelink Diary. At times, homework will be posted digitally on Seesaw.

In order to allow proper focus, we would ask that you ensure that homework  is completed in a room free of distractions. Homework is designed to support the work which is taking place in the classroom and should not be seen as a significant burden on children.

Homelink Diary

The Homelink Diary is designed especially for our children. The Class Teacher will use it every day to note down your child's homework and we will often add in notes which are relevant to the next day. Please check and sign the diary daily. It can also be used to communicate with the Class Teacher and you are welcome to write brief notes or queries in it. Your child should bring their Homelink Diary to school each day and ensure it is well looked after.

Frequently Asked Questions about Homework

Should I correct my child’s mistakes?

We are keen for parents to be involved and correcting mistakes is beneficial to your child. However, should your child have made a lot of mistakes and not grasped a concept, you may wish to leave this for the teacher to address.

What should I do if my child does not understand a task?

You should feel free to give your child a little help but if your child remains confused, a note in the Homelink Diary would be advantageous.

What should I do if my child cannot complete homework?

A simple note in the Homelink Diary if your child has been unwell or similar will allow the teacher to know what has happened.

What should I do if homework is taking a long time?

Children in Primary 1 should not spend more than 15 concentrated minutes on homework a night. If it takes longer then stop your child and write a brief note on the homework or in the Homelink Diary.
