Our Nursery is home to lots of texts. From labels which help children replace items, questions around the room, to words that enrich vocabulary and environmental print, children start to understand that the hieroglyphics they see before them mean something. This is the beginning of learning to read.
Books are everywhere within our setting and the team encourage and nurture a love of books. Whether the children explore different characters in stories or begin to ‘play’ with the patterns of language in books, it is important for the children to explore a range of books and texts in English, home languages and other languages from around the world.
As children realise the squiggles they see make sense to others, they try to replicate them. Our mark making areas support children with easy to use materials, examples of letters and words and alphabet letters which they can pick up and move about. clipboards around the room, areas in the role play setting etc allow reading and writing to be accessed throughout all areas of the Nursery room.
